We have gone to the parents meeting yesterday, concerned about losing the best teachers ( in our daudgter's estimation). Apperently maths teacher Mr Evans is liked and appreciated by a majority of students. But being a good teacher does not count in the process of chosing redundency candidates. As Mrs James told us there are other criteria, which has been used. Being a good teacher seem to go against you too, as bad teachers can't be sacked and are protected by some union laws...
Following this confusing information I have talked to one of the parent governors to be told that the misterious cirteria is mainly to do with the ability of a chosen teacher to speak Welsh, and some other vague ones, as doing certain courses and having certain qualifications... Hang on a minute, it seems the most qualified and equiped are being sacked! Two of the teaches on the parents meeting told us that there is a danger of not having enough qualified teachers next year to teach English and Maths...
I feel, we as parents have to voice our concerns about our kids education. By education I mean not just making sure there are good reports at the end of the term. I mean absorbing values of honesty, self-esteem, respect for others as for oneself, support and consideration for those around you etc... What I see happening at the moment is using power and force to achieve wanted results, wheather it is getting the ' right people' on board, or forcing children out of their own clothes to prove the point about the uniform or bullying them into attending lunch hour welsh club. Force works only to certain degree, the reaction inevitably follows. Reaction I observe in my own child is indifference towards school, lack of initiative, boredom and fear. I would like my daughter to be tought by loving, considerate, creative and kind teachers, and I do not mind which language they are speaking, as long as it is not a language of violence.
